Just Some Stories
The dominant world powers are at war again and advances in space exploration, specifically the colonisation of the planet Mars, slow to a crawl. The United States and Russia both agree to abandon any long-term projects, however, a distress call to the Americans starts an arms race, one that will lead to the greatest discovery in science. A decision must be made: to advise the higher-ups of a potential game changer in world affairs, one that will establish the next superpower’s rule and dominance for a millennia, or to keep secret what has been found. Will mankind be the poorer for this decision or better off? And will what was birthed from fear of the histories of hegemonies be our final call to repentance?
Michael Takeshi is seeing things. He’s just passed a woman in the street who bears a striking resemblance to his childhood friend, Elizabeth Ndubisi. The only problem is Elizabeth’s been missing for twenty years. He calls to the woman and she hesitates for a split second. Or does she? Michael hasn’t been in a good place emotionally since his friend was kidnapped all those years ago. Maybe this is him starting to hallucinate again. He’s been taking his medication – he thinks. The woman denies that they’re acquainted, but Michael can’t shake the feeling she’s lying. This is his friend. And if that’s true where has she been all this time. The answers may not be what he expects and it will lead all concerned down a path of no return.
This story came to me while recovering from a sickle cell crisis. Funny how you can feel guilty when you haven’t done anything wrong. Ola, our heroine, is having such a predicament. She needs to feed on plasma to stay alive. Guided by her father, they’ll both do anything, kill anyone to ensure her survival. But it’s come at the cost of her humanity. With incredible powers at her disposal, Ola is a demigod, taken to killing without remorse. But an encounter with a new friend starts a selfless fight, one that may help her rediscover a part of her that’s been long lost and she feared was dead. Dark Calls the Dark asks a question the infirm ponder all the time: can I remain uncorrupted with this much darkness in me?
